Offshore CV Checklist – 10 Things Recruiters Look For

Use this practical checklist to review your CV before applying for offshore, EPC, oil & gas, construction, commissioning or project controls roles. It is designed for technical professionals who want to present their experience clearly and professionally.

  1. 1. Clear Target Role

Your CV should clearly show the type of role you are targeting — for example Planning Engineer, Project Controls Engineer, Commissioning Engineer, Construction Supervisor or a specific offshore technical role. A recruiter should understand your target within the first few seconds.

  2. 2. Relevant Project Scope

Recruiters need to quickly understand project type, project phase, location, client, contractor, offshore/onshore scope and the scale of responsibility. Give each project a short header with these details before listing what you did.

  3. 3. Offshore, EPC or Construction Experience

Offshore, EPC, fabrication, construction, commissioning and system completion experience should be clearly visible — not hidden inside generic wording. Use industry-standard terminology so relevant experience is immediately recognisable.

  4. 4. Technical Tools and Systems

Mention the tools you actually use: Primavera P6, MS Project, Excel reporting, progress measurement systems, completion systems, planning dashboards and other relevant platforms. Group them logically so recruiters can find them fast.

  5. 5. Clear Responsibilities

Responsibilities should be specific and role-relevant. Avoid generic phrases such as “responsible for planning” or “worked on commissioning” — describe the scope, systems and deliverables you actually owned.

  6. 6. Measurable Achievements

Add measurable results wherever possible: schedule recovery, reporting improvements, progress tracking, reduced delays, handover readiness or improved visibility for management. Numbers and outcomes make your experience credible.

  7. 7. Certifications and Training

Offshore survival, safety, technical and professional certifications should be easy to find — especially for offshore and project-based roles. List them in a dedicated section with expiry dates where relevant.

  8. 8. Role-Specific Keywords

Include relevant keywords for your target role: EPC, offshore, project controls, commissioning, construction, P6, progress measurement, critical path, look-ahead planning and system completion. These help both recruiters and ATS filters.

  9. 9. Clean and Readable Structure

Recruiters should be able to scan your CV quickly. Use clear sections, consistent formatting and no unnecessary design complexity. Simple, professional layouts perform better in ATS systems than heavy graphic templates.

  10. 10. Contact, Availability and Mobility

Contact details, location, availability, rotation preference, mobility and language skills should be clear where relevant. For offshore and project-based roles, availability and mobility are often decisive.
